Today was FUN! Once it got started! Shake rag held their annual Obstacle Trail Course so Missy and Indy and I had planned to go. We also got Kirsten and Eiffel to come too. I went to go pick Missy and Indy up and the weather was sketchy so... it was a little concerning. It looked like bad storms and it started raining when I got there. We debated back and forth for a good bit and I finally told them that since Dan was already in the trailer, I was just going to go... and they could come with me or stay home. It looked like it was supposed to clear up, so... they finally decided to come. So we got Indy loaded and headed out. And it was great because the rain passed and the weather was clear and lovely!
We got tacked up and headed out on course. It was so much fun. Dan was super and did great. The first obstacle was even Bigfoot and he didn't bat an eye. Mostly because it wasn't hidden.. in fact Big Foot was wearing a neon orange construction vest. We had to walk over a piece of plywood painted to look like the road. Bonus points if we stepped on the "pothole". Dan didn't even care and even tried to pull Bigfoots vest off. Whooops!
I can't remember the exact order of the obstacles but they were all fun. There were flags and pinwheels, which Dan didn't even notice because there was no wind. There was a giant horse ball that they had put in a square of ground poles. The goal was to get the horse in the square and have the horse push the ball out. Easy. Dan did it in like 4 seconds! They also had the pully hoist thing again... where you had to grab a rope and back the horse up, pulling a tree branch up in the air, then walk forward and lower it. Again, no problems there. We had to pick up a water bottle (empty so crinkly) off a barrel with one of those grabber sticks and then walk over to the other barrel and "recycle" the bottle. Super easy! There was also a set of umbrellas (like beach umbrellas) stuck in the ground and you had to weave through them, like a pole race. I opted to trot and Dan weaved through great. Fun!! Another easy one was the black pipe snakes next to a tarp they had to walk over. Whatevs... Easy mode!
The harder ones were fun too though. There was a "cemetary" with a bunch of sheets blowing in the wind... they had to walk up to a mirror and get so close. The sheets weren't even part of the obstacle...but they were scarier than the mirror. Dan booped the mirror. But he did have a peek at the sheets. And then there was a plastic red sled on a rope with an inflatable deer on it.. (fawn sized) that you had to drag around a tree! I figured Dan would be okay with it, given his t-rex sledding situation, and he was. Granted, he also got to watch a bunch of other horses do it because there was a back up. But, in the field past the treeline was a bunch of kids riding dirt bikes and they were whizzing around and gunning it so it was an awful noisy whine and the horses were getting really freaked out! I think Dan was more worried about that than the sled!
The only one we had trouble with was the triple down banks. Wait... what?!?! YOU'RE AN EVENT HORSE SIR!!! ha ha. He scored a 7, but should have scored a 10. We went first and he was about to go down them and Missy was cheating and hot on our butts, and right as we went to go down, some horses came out of the woods and he stopped to stare. Well then Indy bumped him, so he turned sideways and then I had to represent. But then he hopped down all three, but he kept trying to look in the woods. After Eiffel went, I went back through and he literally trotted down all three like a rockstar event horse. Goober. And.. not a big deal, except... WE WON RESERVE CHAMPION!!! And we would have tied with the first place girl who "always wins it". Like... she's a celebrity and they talk about her always showing up and winning. Dammit Dan! ha ha... Oh well. Reserve Champion in the open division for a horse that hasn't done "obstacles" in a long time is pretty darn good! I'm quite proud of him and how he handled himself.
